Chapter 12
STARSKY

Susan continued to attend counseling sessions with Amy Schultz. Susan also continued to see both Ken Hutchinson and David Starsky on a purely platonic basis. Hutch was sweet and even a little shy at times. She found that he was an accomplished musician and he often played his guitar for her, singing songs he had written. Susan also learned that Hutch enjoyed going to the ballet and the opera--both things that Susan also enjoyed. David Starsky was not a fan of ballet and he would not have known the difference between Tosca and Aida. But he DID know and enjoy old movies--a passion that Susan also shared. As the summer went by, it was not unusual for David to call her and say, "Hey! They're having a Bogart film festival at a revival house downtown. Wanna go? I'll buy the popcorn this time!"

And so, over the weeks, Susan began seeing more and more of David Starsky and less and less on a purely platonic basis. One night, after a Marx Brothers double feature, Starsky had dropped her at her apartment and given her a quick peck on the cheek as he had done a few other times. However, this time, instead of saying, "Good night," they had looked at one another for a long time. Slowly, he had moved his head toward hers, keeping his eyes open, making sure he was not misreading her expression. She had also moved her head toward his, her eyes closed. There was no mistaking what she wanted. Their first real kiss that night had been tentative--a sample, an appetizer. It had lasted only a second or two, and, when it was over, they had looked at one another in breathless wonder. He had grinned at her, and she at him. Then, the ice finally broken, they had kissed again--this time a little longer, a little bolder. It was still only a taste of what was to come, but it had served to whet both of their appetites.

Starsky had called Hutch when he got home. He wasn't sure what to say, since he knew that Hutch also had feelings for Susan. He and Hutch had always had a friendly sort of rivalry when it came to women, but they had never both vied for the attentions of the same woman--until now. Or so he thought. Starsky had been nervous when he told Hutch what had happened, but Hutch had taken the news philosophically.

"Well, Gordo," he said, "it doesn't surprise me. I mean, look at the giant head start you got on me while I was in the hospital."

"C'mon, Hutch, it's not like that and you know it!"

"I know it!" Hutch had laughed. "Look, Starsk. I like Susan very much, but I've felt all along that YOU are the one she has the biggest bond with, the most in common with."

"But, Hutch," he had said, "I'm scared. This is the first time I have felt this way about someone since...since Terry's death."

"I know," Hutch had said, quietly. "And it's time, pal, it's time. Terry would want you to be happy. I say, go for it!"

Starsky had nodded. "Thanks, Blintz."

A few days later, Susan had called Hutch to tell him that she didn't think she would be doing things with him the way she had been the past few weeks. "Things are, things are...heating up between David and myself. I-I'm sorry, Ken. I just don't feel right without telling you. I hope that you don't hate me."

Hutch had smiled. "Of course I don't hate you, Susan. I understand--really I do. And I can't imagine anyone better for you than David Starsky. You're a lucky woman and he's a lucky guy." Then, after a moment had gone by, Hutch had added, "And, if he breaks your heart, I'll beat him to a pulp!"

One night, a few days before the beginning of the new school year, Susan and David had just finished a pizza while watching an old movie on TV at Susan's apartment. They snuggled together on the couch while the credits were rolling. A few nights ago, they had been snuggling together on the couch and, before they knew it, they were lying down, kissing one another with a passion that Susan had never felt, even when she was married to John. Starsky was such a good kisser. His lips were soft and he seemed to be tasting her, savoring her, as well as kissing her that night.

Tonight, as the credits continued to roll, their eyes met and, once again, they began to kiss, again and again. Before they knew it, they were lying down again, him lying beneath her, tongues thrusting and caressing, arms and hands exploring each other from the waist up. They had not removed any of their clothing--yet. My God! she thought. I haven't "made out" with anyone since John and I were dating!

Hesitantly, as they kissed, he slid his hands beneath the pullover top she was wearing. He hadn't intended to take any of her clothes off, he just wanted to feel the smoothness of her skin. However, she had raised up so that she was sitting astride him. She grasped the hem of her top and pulled it up over her head. She wore a plain, white cotton bra. Starsky held his breath. He didn't want to misinterpret her action. He reached up and pulled her down against him, kissing her with renewed passion and letting his hands roam freely over the soft curves of her upper body. A shiver seemed to go through her as his thumbs briefly brushed against her hardened nipples, which he felt quite plainly through the cotton bra.

"Are you cold?" he asked.

"No," she said, her voice husky with desire. She sat up again and began to unbutton his shirt. He now sat up, too, in order to speed up the process. Susan was surprised by the lush chest hair that David had. She tentatively ran her fingers through it. She then ran her hands through the soft curls on his head. He bent his head to nuzzle his face into her cleavage. She could feel an unmistakable bulge beneath her as she sat astride him. They continued to explore one another with hands and lips, touching and tasting.

At last, he felt they must stop or reach a point of no return. "Susan," he said, trying to catch his breath. "I think we'd better stop--unless one of us wants to try to find an all-night drug store!"

Susan smiled. "After the other night, I went out and bought something from the drugstore."

He smiled at her in wonder. "You bought condoms?"

"No," she said, a little self-consciously now. "Spermicidal foam." She raised her eyes to see his reaction.

He took her hands in his and smiled, kissing each of her fingers. "Then, what are we waiting for?"

In only a few short minutes, Susan had made an obligatory trip to the bathroom. When she came out she was wrapped in her bathrobe, wearing nothing beneath it.

David had moved in to her bedroom. He was divesting himself of his briefs as she came toward him.

The sight of him nude made her suck in her breath. "MY GOD!" she said.

He held out his arms to her and she stepped into his embrace. In a moment, the robe had fallen to the floor. David pulled her backwards with him onto the bed. Remembering her reaction when he had rubbed his thumbs against her nipples through her bra, he guessed he could not go wrong with the same thing now. She cried out in sheer pleasure as he rubbed her hardened nipples with his thumbs. Gradually he began to suckle and to kiss each breast, alternately rolling one nipple between his thumb and forefinger while he rolled the other gently between his tongue and his teeth. She climaxed for the first time while he was doing this.

It was such exquisite agony, but she wanted to feel him inside of her. She reached down and put the head of his shaft at the juncture between her legs. She was moist and warm and more than ready. And so was he. She gasped as he slid into her. He was so big, so long. Immediately, she began to come again. He rolled them over so that she was now on her back. Again and again, he thrust himself into her, moaning and laughing in sheer pleasure. When, at last, they were both spent, he pulled out and cuddled beside her, both of them panting and sweating and so very, very happy.

Not since Terry had he felt this way. Not since John had she felt this way.

Before they fell asleep in one another's arms, he whispered, "I love you, Susan."

"I love you, too, David," she answered.
