Rosie's Dog
by
Peg

The blond jumped off the hood of the car after looking over the fence. The dog was nowhere to be seen. He walked to the passenger side of the Torino and got in.

The brunette leaned down and fussed through the driver's window. "Hey, this is my car. Don't walk on it."

"You do, so why can't I?"

"That is different, I only walk on it when I'm trying to save your butt. You're only looking for a lost dog."

"Only a lost dog! Dobey said we needed to find this lost dog to get back on regular rotation. I personally do not want to spend the rest of the summer looking in back alleys and garbage dumps for a dog."

"What makes Dobey think the dog is still out here?"

"Rosie told him she saw it again this morning."

"So now Rosie is the dog expert! This is bull. We are trained detectives; we should be looking for criminals. Not a neighborhood pest."

"Dobey said the dog has terrorized Rosie on the way home from school for the last week."

"Then call Animal Control."

"Starsk, this is Rosie we are talking about."

"I know, it's just we have been looking for two days now and haven't seen any dogs. Are you sure Rosie isn't making it up?"

"Starsk."

"Yea."

"Don't move."

"Why?"

"It's behind you."

"What!"

"Rosie's dog is behind you!"

"Are you pulling my leg? I was only fussing because we haven't seen a dog. You know I wouldn't stop until we found it. The thought of Rosie being scared by a dog."

"Will you shut up and listen. The dog is really behind you."

Starsky slowly pulled his head back out of the window and turned. There stood the biggest dog he had ever seen. The dog had blue eyes, had to be the right dog with those eyes and teeth! They looked huge! Suddenly he became aware of a deep growl coming from the direction of the dog.

"Hutch."

"Yes."

"Have a plan?"

"No, you?"

"No, shoot it?"

"But he hasn't done anything yet."

"From where I stand he has."

"He is only growling."

"That is enough."

"Rosie said he only growls. Then disappears as she screams."

Just then they heard a whistle, the dog turned and trotted away.

"No, you don't. Hutch get the car started, I'm going to follow him."

"Starsk, be careful."

"Careful is my middle name."

By the time Hutch had the car started and turned around, Starsky was around the corner. When Hutch reached the end of the street, Starsky was turning the corner on the next block over. Hutch had just barely gotten a glimpse of him. He had to speed up to see what way the dog was going to lead them next.

He lost them! So he started to cruise slowly down the street, looking and listening.

"Hutch."

"Where are you?"

"Over here."

"Over where?"

"By the big Pine tree."

"What happen to the dog?"

"He went in that house."

"What house?"

"The one next to the Pine tree, why do you think I'm at the dam tree."

"Did you see who let him in?"

"No."

"What to go knock on the door?"

"No."

"Have a better idea?"

"No."

"Than go knock on the door?"

"Do you think the dog will answer?"

"Why you afraid of a dog?"

"Did you see the size of that dog? It was big enough to swallow me whole."

"Do you want me to knock?"

"Yes."

"I will if you are scared."

"Yes."

"It is only a dog."

"Hutch, stop stalling and go knock on the door. You said you were not afraid of a little dog."

Hutch turned off the car and got out. He walked to the front door with caution. He was looking around as he approached the house. Starsky was following. The pair covered each other as if they were on a case with human criminals. Before Hutch could knock, a growl came from the other side of the door. Both men stopped and looked at each other.

"Knock, Hutch, it is only a dog."

But before he could rap on the door, it was pulled open. There stood a little old lady, smaller than the dog so it seemed. The dog stood next to her growling.

"Hush, Max. What can I do for you nice young men?"

"Madam, is that your dog?" Hutch asked.

Starsky's eyes were glued to the dog, which now stood quietly next to the woman.

"Yes, Max here is my constant companion. Why do you ask?"

"Was he just out on the street by himself?"

"I don't think so. I put him in the yard out back."

Starsky and Hutch exchanged a glance.

"May we see the yard?" Starsky asked.

"Sure. Let me lead the way. Max back up to let the men in."

Max backed up and stood between the woman and the two officers. As the woman lead them through the house the dog always kept himself between the woman and the officers. Both men realized they would not be able to touch the woman without being bitten. Once they had reached the back yard, the answer to how the dog had gotten out was clear, the gate was open.

"Max, are you opening gates again? What has he done?"

"Madam, he has been scaring a little girl on her way to and home from school. He growls at her, but when she screams, he disappears," Hutch informed her.

"Officer, believe me he didn't mean her any harm. You see, Max is a Husky and they can only growl. If it were a threatening growl, her scream would have not stopped him. But it is not like him to growl at children."

"Madam, we only know what Rosie tells us," Starsky stated.

Just than Max started to growl again, but this time Starsky and Hutch could tell the dog meant business. The two men felt the growl, as well as heard it. They both looked in the direction the dog was looking and in the alley behind the house stood another dog. This one was black all over and foaming at the mouth.

"That is him, that is the dog I sent Max out after. He keeps following that little girl home from school. I spotted him the other day stalking her. She walks by everyday after school Max and I watch her, to make sure she gets home OK. One day last week, I noticed that dog following her. So I sent Max to protect her. I didn't know her parents or who she was. So I sent Max. He scared the other dog away and follower her to her house. He must have seen the dog stalking her this morning. I didn't know whom to call. People would think I'm crazy. Calling about a dog following a child home from school."

As Starsky and Hutch watched, the black dog started to move toward the people in the yard, Max moved to protect the group. Starsky pulled his revolver. This dog was not going to bite him or anyone in the group as far as he was concerned. Hutch had also drawn his gun. But before either man could shoot, the black dog lunged at the old woman. Max was faster and took the dog down with one move. It was not a long fight, but a deadly one. As soon as the other dog stopped advancing Max backed off, Hutch fired first, Starsky's shot was almost at the same instant.

As soon as the danger was over the old woman took Max, went inside to check him over and call animal control.

Starsky and Hutch look at each other.

Hutch was the first to break the silence. "Was that rabies?"

"I don't know. You're the nature boy."

"My god! What if that dog had bitten Rosie? He could have killer her."

"But he didn't"

"Thanks to Max."

"Man's best friend."

"And Rosie's"

"We better call Dobey and tell him what happened."

The End

Me and Thee Make Us Whole

Blue Eyes,
Blues as a clear sky,
Blues as the Ocean in the tropics,
Blues as a lost soul without him.

Gentle Heart,
Gentle touch to heal,
Gentle as the tender lover,
Gentle as a friend's love for him.

Blond hair,
Blond the color of wheat,
Blond the color of a Palomino in the sun,
Blond the color of a summer day in his company.

Honest soul,
Honest to a fault,
Honest to deal with,
Honest to myself because he keeps me that way.

Blues eyes,
Blue as sapphires,
Blue as the night sky,
Blues as the lost soul without him.

Strong heart,
Strong to handle life,
Strong to keep the faith,
Strong to take care of a friend.

Brown hair,
Brown the color of bears,
Brown the color of the earth,
Brown the color of life on the streets.

Honest soul,
Honest to a fault,
Honest to deal with,
Honest to myself because he keeps me that way.

Counterpart

Though they may squabble and fight,

There is only one place for Starsky's counterpart.

Because when he is up or he is down,

Only to Starsky can Hutch relate.

To take on one is to attack the other,

Only they can pick on one another.

So if these two you ever chance to meet,

Tread lightly or you may meet,

The one and only Starsky-Hutch or Hutch-Starsky!

The Eyes

The eyes,
They are the window to the soul,
Or so I have been told.

His are blue,
Clear and bright,
Sapphire blue like the night.

They looked through me,
into my soul,
His seemed icy cold.

But then he smiled,
It lit up my night,
And seemed to make everything all right.

I dared to put out my hand,
to put my trust in this man,
And his taller blond companion.

The pain,
It is still here,
My attacker over there.

But Mr. Blue Eyes,
And Mr. White Night his friend,
Said they would help me though to the end.

I know somehow I can trust them,
Because I have been told,
The eyes they are the windows to the soul.

Writing Assignment # 2 This was written as a challenge to write a story from a Beatles Song:

Babe, you can drive my car!

Hutch was smiling to himself as he stood over the unconscious perp thinking, No use reading rights to this guy for a while. Just then the sound of squealing tires, as they came to a halt at the end of the alley, brought him out of his thoughts and a frown started to appear on his face. How do I tell Starsky about his car?

Earlier in the evening as they where leaving work, Hutch had been headed out on a date with a new lady, when his car wouldn't start. As he had sat frowning at the wheel a familiar voice had said, "Hey, Babe, you can drive my car."

To say Hutch was surprised was an understatement, but as he looked at his watch and realized he would be late if he didn't get moving, he said, "Thanks, Buddy, I owe you one."

"You owe me more than one!" was the response. "I'll get this bucket of bolts started and we can trade back tomorrow, sometime. And you owe me a big one! You get to pick up your new lady in style."

Hutch rolled his eyes in response but only said, "Thanks, I'll call you tomorrow when I get up." Smiling at Starsky as he drove away. He had not fallen into Starsky's trap to pick on him about his car this time.

Starsky watched Hutch drive away thinking, I hope she knows how lucky she is. You have been so excited all day about this date. I only hope she is worth it.' As Hutch and his car turned the corner out of site, Starsky shook his head and stared at the LTD talking to it as if it could respond, "Now what is wrong with you?" He popped the hood and looked for something loose.

Hutch had only driven a few blocks when all hell broke loose. He was crossing the last big intersection before entering the small community where his date lived, when a bright red Mustang with a white rose on its side ran the red light and hit Starsky's car.

The Mustang clipped the rear end of the Torino causing it to spin a 360.

"What the...!" Was all Hutch got out as he fought to get the car back under control. Once the car had stopped its spin, he grabbed the mike and called for back up as he started pursuit of the Mustang.

The Mustang had only gone a few feet when it started to steam. Hutch hadn't even had time to put the light out yet. Hutch, smiled to himself, knowing the suspect needed to find new transportation; he was as good as caught.

As Hutch watched, the car pulled up in front of a flower shop, the door flew open and a figure ran into the shop.

Hutch slid the Torino to a stop to follow the suspect; he thought to himself as he got out in pursuit, Even when Starsky isn't driving the Torino, it still tries to kill me and why is it always flower shops lately?

Hutch heard the sounds of sirens in the distance as he followed the suspect into the flower shop. When he opened the door, a bullet splintered the doorsill next to his head, so he ducked and rolled behind the counter, where a wide-eyed sales girl greeted him. Hutch showed her his badge as he pulled his gun and yelled, "Police. You are under arrest; give your self up. It will go easier on you."

In response a male voice was heard to say, "OH, shit, it's a cop." Followed by the sounds of retreating feet.

Hutch started to rise slowly to pear over the counter, when the sales girl said, "I think he is trying to go out the back door."

"Ok, you stay down. Police are on the way; stay put and tell them I went out the back door in pursuit." Hutch patted her shoulder and gave her a grin before he left her to follow the perp.

As he entered the back of the shop, he heard a loud bang and raced to the open back door. He slowed just before he exited the shop; he peeked out to see if he could see anyone in the alley. He couldn't see anyone. He looked up and down the alley twice before he noticed the pair of legs next to the dumpsite and the open lid. He looked around once more before he exited the shop and moved over to the fallen man.

Could this be his perp? He was out cold! What happened? was running through his head as he moved slowly out of the shop.

Once outside, what had happen was self evident, with the lid of the dumpster open there was not enough room to get down the steps without running into it. So in his haste to get away, the suspect had ran into the dumpster lid and knocked himself out! That was the bang he had heard from inside the shop.

As loud as the sound had been Hutch figured the man would be out for a good while and have one very large headache when he did wake up.

Hutch move forward to check the man's pulse and secure the gun; it was still warm.

Internal affairs would be happy. He was starting to chuckle. They couldn't say I used unnecessary force to subdue this guy. What a strange idea: happiness is a warm gun.

Hutch was smiling to himself as he stood over the man. No use reading rights to this guy for a while.

Just then the sound of squealing tires as they came to a halt at the end of the alley, brought him out of his thoughts and a frown started to appear on his face. Now, how do I tell Starsky about his car?
